The different types of marketing
Marketing is a diverse field with so many types that people might get lost. In today’s world, the amount of communication we’re exposed to is abusive and our brains are selecting what we pay attention to automatically.
The marketing world is composed of several marketing types
If you search online, you will see that several blog posts list the “types of marketing” and these lists can be enormous with more than 40 types and others more consider, with less than 10. In the end, what really matters is what will help you to achieve your marketing goals. For me, considering we’re living in a digital era and I like to divide the types of marketing into:
Online strategy (inbound marketing)
vs
Offline strategy (traditional marketing)
By online I mean everything that is done through digital, we can include websites, social media, TV shows, and all possible digital channels. Offline would be more flyers, business cards, trade shows, events, and press conferences.
Even though there are several types of marketing and even if we summarize them following my proposal of online versus offline, there is one thing common to all of them: they are there to deliver a message and in the communication flow you always have to think what is your objective and do everything you can for your target audience to understand it correctly.
I mentioned before that other blog posts segment marketing in so many different types and there is one of them that is extremely related to online and offline strategies: content marketing.
Content marketing is nothing more than structuring your communication in a way that you will catch the attention of the audience, and it will always depend on your objective. Content can be developed to educate a market and share knowledge, it could be focused on sales in order to generate leads or raise brand awareness about a single product or the company itself.
Now… going back to where we started: if we are overwhelmed with the amount of content we receive, either online or offline, how does the marketing team adapt to this context? What does it mean for content marketing? This is a great topic for another blog post! Now that you already know a little bit more about the marketing types, stay tuned, next week’s topic will be the most exciting one: content marketing for inbound strategies!
